Republic of Korea

As you all know, I just spent two weeks in beautiful South Korea. It was awesome. I worked at the HQ of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC). I was assigned a job working a system I had never used before and nobody there had any idea what my role in the exercise was. In other words, I got a two week vacation in Korea! The food was delicious. I ate out in town with two other US Marines the first day we had liberty. The lady who worked there didn't speak any English, but they had pictures we pointed to and I knew how to say yes, no, hello and thank you. Basically I was almost fluent in Korean. I also got so sick of the food that the combat cooks prepared for us that I ate almost every day at a little diner type spot in the HQ building. I tried to take a picture of the crazy lady who worked there, but it didn't turn out well. The picture of me with three Koreans is at the diner, or "Sheem-tah."
I was supposed to be able to take a trip to the DMZ, but the captain in charge of us didn't get us a bus in time. Then I was supposed to be able to take a night tour of Seoul, but that trip got canceled. I did get to look around Osan a little. Most of the parts I was in were unfortunately designed to cater to US military.
The barracks I stayed in were much nicer than the ones that my Marines stay in. They were a squad bay type set-up, but they were nice and well-maintained. The heat was produced by hot-water pipes that ran under the sleeping areas.
The picture with all the guys in red shirts is me with all my junior enlisted ROKMC buddies. A lot of them had lived in the US, and were there as translators.
Anyway, it was a great trip with few snags. I got switched to a supervisor when I was going through customs because my unit printed my SSN wrong on my orders. I had even told them it was wrong when they printed them up for me, but they said it was too late to change them.
This last picture is the view from just outside the barracks.

Oooh, radiant floor heating! So cool! Do you recommend it?

It definitely kept the place warm, plus you didn't have to worry about feet on the cold floor in the morning, since the floor was the warmest part of the room. When you are sleeping right on the ground, though, it gets a little hot.
